CREDENTIALS SERVICE

WHY USE THE CREDENTIALS SERVICES

Graduate schools, educational institutions, social service agencies and many business organizations require reference letters from faculty and/or previous employers. The Career Center offers a Reference Service that provides the following advantages:

  • A central location for maintaining your recommendations.
  • The need for only one original reference per recommender, which can be sent to many organizations.
  • Copies of your recommendations will be duplicated and mailed to prospective employers and/or graduate schools.
  • The knowledge that all your recommendations have been sent at one time.
CHOOSING RECOMMENDERS

Most organizations request three (3) recommendations. Graduate/Professional recommendations should be written by three faculty members who know you well enough to evaluate your academic work. Employment recommendations should be written by both faculty members and present or past employers who can evaluate both your job and academic abilities.

  • How do I Ask?
    Etiquette requires that you discuss the purpose of the recommendation with each recommender and ask that a supportive letter be written for you. If the writer is off-campus, provide a stamped envelope addressed to Career Center, Rutgers University, 326 Penn Street, Camden, NJ 08102.
     
  • What do I ask for?
    Since we are required to send a complete set of employment or graduate school references, it would be to your benefit to encourage writers to be as generic as possible in describing your qualifications/attributes. We will, however, separate references directed to a specific field or interest upon your written request (i.e., Law School).
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR LETTERS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED BY THE CAREER CENTER.

FORMS

Credential Services Registration Form - Completion of this  form will open your credential file with the Career Center.  Just print it out, complete all information and return it to the front desk of the Career Center.

Reference Transmittal Form - This needs to be completed by you and dropped off or mailed to the Career Center.
References will generally be mailed within a 24 hour period once we receive your request.

You now have the convenience of printing reference  forms for Graduate School, Medical School or Employment and giving them to the faculty members and others for completion. 
NOTE:  Please remind the recommender to attach a separate statement of reference on their letterhead to the standardized form.  

All original completed reference forms must be returned directly to the Career Center from the recommender.   Use of these forms other than with our Credentials Service is prohibited.  YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO COPY THE COMPLETED REFERENCE  FORMS AND USE THEM AS IF IT WAS YOUR OWN SERVICE.
