INTERSHIP FAIR TIPS
RESUME
Bring plenty of resume to give to employers. Note: some employers will not take resume, but instead will refer you to apply for internships on their website.
RESEARCH
The Career Center publishes the list of registered employers along with the majors and jobs/internships that they are recruiting for in Handshake. Review the list and research the organizations. Prepare a few questions for the recruiter to really impress them. Bring enough copies of your resume to give to all the companies that interest you, and a few extras, just in case.
CREATE YOUR 60 SECOND PITCH
Based on the internships that interests you, prepare a short sales pitch as to why you would be a good candidate for them and what you have to offer their organization. Let the recruiter know what skills or experience you possess. Offer your unique selling point; what do you have to offer that no-one else can?
DRESS THE PART
Demonstrate to a recruiter that you are a serious about the job and internship search by dressing professionally. Dress as professionally as your wardrobe will allow and groom.
PREPARE A GAME PLAN
Plan to visit with the employers on your list. Introduce yourself, hand out your resume, and give your 60 Second Pitch. Ask questions and, most importantly, ask for the recruiter’s business card.
THANK YOU & FOLLOW UP
You should walk out of the internship fair with a pocket full of business cards. Be sure to follow-up and thank the recruiter for taking the time to talk with you. Reinforce why you want to work for their organization. And finally, ask for the interview. If, during your conversation with an employer, they instructed you to apply for a position on their website, do so as soon as possible.
